Programme profile

If you wish to pursue music professionally, this programme embraces the history of music, the study of music in culture, and the analysis and criticism of music.

Music at UCD covers four main areas of study: musicology, ethnomusicology, music theory and performance. Musicology embraces the historical and cultural study of music; ethnomusicology explores non-Western music and Western folk music; music theory deals with the analysis of musical structure. There are also three performing ensembles in which students can participate for credit: the UCD Choral Scholars, the UCD Symphony Orchestra and the UCD Philharmonic Choir.

Programme content

Foundation modules in Musicology at Stage 1 focus on European art music, compositional and analytical techniques and traditional music in Ireland. At Stage 2, the base of study is gradually broadened to include musics of the world and, as your study progresses, you will be able to choose more specialised modules such as African American Religious Music, or Music of the High Baroque.
